International Overdose Awareness Day Memorial

August 31st

As we approach International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, we invite you to take part in a meaningful act of remembrance of lives lost to overdose in Massachusetts at this year’s memorial hosted by BSAS, City of Boston, and Boston Medical Center.

Together we will plant over 20,000 purple flags on the Liberty Mall at the Boston Common, creating a visual tribute to honor those we’ve lost and support families and communities changed. Flag planting will take place on August 31st across from the Massachusetts State House and the memorial will remain in place through September 3rd.

Your time and presence make a real difference, and we would be grateful to have you stand with us in remembrance, hope, and unity. Please see the schedule for August 31st below:

  • 7:30 AM: Volunteers arrive at Liberty Mall and flag planting begins

Arrive at Liberty Mall (across from the State House) at 7:30 AM, where you will be assigned a task.

  • 9:00 AM: Public officials arrive for brief remarks and moment of silence

Flag planting will pause for remarks from public officials and a moment of silence. We will resume planting flags until the display is complete, likely around midday.

Other details:

  • You are encouraged to wear purple (either your shirt from last year’s event or another purple item), and to dress comfortably for the weather.
  • Water, snacks, and resources will be available. Please rest as needed during the day!
